Sports massage is a simple, commonly used form of therapy popular in sport. The benefits and effects of sports massage include physical effects such as circulating blood and lymphatic fluids as well as stretching muscle tissue and breaking down scar tissue. There are physiological effects such as reducing pain and relaxing muscles as well as psychological affects which include reducing anxiety levels. Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons. But you don’t have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Swedish massage is the most common and best-known type of massage using various massage strokes that include effleurage (gliding), kneading, friction, stretching and (sometimes) tapping.The main purpose of Swedish massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Swedish massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Swedish massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. Swedish massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating and promotes health and well-being.


Pregnancy massage: also known as pre-natal massage is a specific type of massage therapy performed on an expectant mother. Expectant moms experience unique physical and emotional changes that occur as a result of increased weight, shifting posture, and adjusting hormone levels. While this is a beautiful period of heightened expectation and joy, mothers-to-be also endure heightened physical discomfort that ranges from muscular tension and headaches to pressure on the knees. Prenatal massage is a natural, touch therapy treatment aimed at alleviating these and other pregnancy related symptoms. Prenatal Massage eases many of the little pains and discomforts of pregnancy. It is nurturing and has been proven to help improve sleep and shorten labor.


Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT): is a very specialized form of manual therapy. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system. In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses (which are responsible for every movement, function and thought) to the body very slowly. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction. It is therefore necessary to stabilize low levels of neurological activity to maintain normal function and overall health.


Trigger points therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on releasing “trigger points in your body”. Trigger pints are discrete, focal, hyperirritable spots located in a taut band of skeletal muscle. They produce pain locally and in a referred pattern and often accompany chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Acute trauma or repetitive micro trauma may lead to the development of stress on muscle fibers and the formation of trigger points. Patients may have regional, persistent pain resulting in a decreased range of motion in the affected muscles. Palpation of a hypersensitive bundle or nodule of muscle fiber of harder than normal consistency is the physical finding typically associated with a trigger point. Palpation of the trigger point will elicit pain directly over the affected area and/or cause radiation of pain toward a zone of reference and a local twitch response. While the therapy can be somewhat uncomfortable at the time, the results are lasting and beneficial.


Lymphatic Massage – also known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) – is a highly specialized and gentle massage technique used to increase lymph flow and encourage the natural drainage of the lymph from the body tissues.  It is a very safe and effective technique that is useful for many conditions where lymph flow may be compromised, such as lymphedema; swollen limbs caused by a variety of different things, in diabetics, sports injuries, post-surgical, etc.  For example, many clients require lymphatic therapy or lymphatic massage to treat the increased swelling and lymph accumulation that occurs after a mastectomy, or other surgical procedures, especially those where lymph nodes may be removed or damaged. Lymphatic massage can help cancer patients get rid of excess water retention due to lack of missing lymph nodes as well as feeling “being cared for” while on this journey.
